Choosing the wrong CDL school can cost you thousands of dollars and months of your time. Before you enroll anywhere, watch for these warning signs.
🚩 Red Flag #1: No FMCSA Registration
Since 2022, all CDL training providers must be registered with the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). If a school isn't registered, your training won't count toward your CDL — period. Always verify at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov.
🚩 Red Flag #2: Vague Pricing or Hidden Fees
Reputable schools are upfront about total costs. Be suspicious if you can't get a clear written number for total tuition, what's included vs. extra, and fees for testing, permits, or materials.
🚩 Red Flag #3: High-Pressure Sales Tactics
"This price is only good today" is a classic pressure move. Good schools don't need to rush you. Take time to compare, visit the facility, and read the enrollment contract carefully before signing anything.
🚩 Red Flag #4: Old or Poorly Maintained Trucks
You want to train on modern equipment similar to what you'll drive professionally. Ask to see the training trucks in person before you enroll. Beat-up, outdated equipment is a red flag about how the school runs overall.
🚩 Red Flag #5: No Real Student Reviews
Check Google, CDLSpot, and the BBB for real feedback. A school with zero reviews — or only vague 5-star ones with no details — is a yellow flag. Schools with dozens of specific, honest reviews (including some constructive ones) are more credible.
🚩 Red Flag #6: "Get Your CDL in 1 Week" Claims
FMCSA's ELDT requirements mandate minimum training hours that make 1-week programs essentially impossible to run legally and effectively. Be very skeptical of any school making this claim.
🚩 Red Flag #7: No Job Placement Support
The best schools have carrier relationships and help you get hired after graduation. Ask specifically: "What carriers do your graduates work for?" No answer is a bad answer.
What to Look For Instead
- FMCSA-registered training provider
- Transparent, written pricing
- 4.0+ Google rating with many reviews
- Modern trucks (2018 or newer)
- Low student-to-truck ratios
- Job placement partnerships with carriers
- Financing or payment plan options
