H — HazMat
- Transporting hazardous materials (chemicals, flammables, explosives)
- Requires: knowledge test + TSA background check + fingerprinting
- Pay bump: $5,000–$15,000/year · Renewal: every 5 years
N — Tanker
- Tank vehicles carrying liquid or gaseous materials
- Requires: knowledge test only
- Pay bump: $5,000–$12,000/year
X — HazMat + Tanker Combo
Automatically added when you hold both H and N. One of the highest-paying specialties in trucking.
T — Doubles/Triples
- Pulling double or triple trailers
- Requires: knowledge test
- Pay bump: $3,000–$8,000/year
- Note: not legal in all states
P — Passenger
- Buses carrying 16+ passengers
- Requires: knowledge test + skills test in a bus
Best Endorsements for Pay
- HazMat + Tanker (X): $70,000–$100,000+/year
- HazMat alone: $65,000–$90,000/year
- Tanker alone: $60,000–$85,000/year
When to Get Them
Many drivers get their base CDL first, then add endorsements when they find jobs that need them. Getting HazMat or Tanker before job-hunting opens significantly more doors from day one.
